GST Invoice Amendment Explained (Rules, Time Limit & Process)

Once a GST invoice is issued, you cannot simply edit or delete it. GST law prescribes specific methods to correct errors — amendment through GSTR-1 for minor corrections, credit/debit notes for value changes. Getting this wrong affects both your returns and the recipient's ITC.

Invoice value too high Issue Credit Note
Invoice value too low Issue Debit Note
Wrong HSN/SAC code Amend in GSTR-1 (Table 9A)

Time Limit for GST Invoice Amendment

Amendments to a B2B invoice reported in GSTR-1 can be made in any subsequent return until the due date of the return for September of the following financial year, or the date of filing the annual return (GSTR-9) — whichever is earlier. For FY 2025-26 invoices, amendments must be made by October 31, 2026 (September return due date). After this, amendments are not possible through the GST portal — only a manual credit/debit note can adjust the values.

FAQs

Can I edit a GST invoice after it is issued?

No — you cannot modify the original invoice document after issuing it. For data errors (wrong GSTIN, date), amend in GSTR-1. For value changes, issue a credit or debit note referencing the original invoice number.

How to amend a GST invoice in GSTR-1?

In GSTR-1, go to Table 9A (Amended B2B invoices). Enter the original invoice details and the corrected values. The amendment flows to the recipient's GSTR-2B.

What happens if I amend an e-invoice?

E-invoices with an IRN cannot be amended on the IRP. You must cancel the IRN within 24 hours (or 30 days for older invoices) and generate a new e-invoice. Amendments in GSTR-1 can still be made independently.

What is the time limit for GST invoice amendment?

By September return due date of the following financial year, or the GSTR-9 filing date — whichever is earlier. For FY 2025-26 invoices, the deadline is October 31, 2026.

Why Businesses Stop Using Excel for GST Invoices

Manual GST calculation mistakes

One wrong CGST/SGST split or a misapplied rate triggers notices and ITC denial for your buyer.

Slow invoice creation

Copying last month's Excel file, updating dates, recalculating — 20 minutes for what should take 30 seconds.

Formatting breaks on every device

Excel invoices look different on every printer and PDF converter. Clients complain about unreadable layouts.

No easy sharing or payment link

Sending PDFs over WhatsApp with no way for clients to pay directly slows down collections.

Incorrect tax type (IGST vs CGST+SGST)

Excel can't auto-detect intra vs inter-state supply. Wrong tax type = ITC rejected for your buyer.
