FAQs — 18% GST Rate GST
Why is 18% the most common GST rate?
18% is the standard rate in the GST structure, capturing the broadest range of goods and services. It replaced the pre-GST combined central excise + VAT rates (typically 12.5% + 5–6%) on most manufactured goods and services (service tax was 15% in 2017). Most B2B services are at 18%, enabling full ITC flow through the supply chain.
Can businesses claim full ITC at 18%?
Yes. For most business purchases taxed at 18%, the full ITC is claimable subject to standard conditions: the goods/services are used for business, the supplier has filed their GSTR-1, the invoice reflects in GSTR-2B, and the payment has been made within 180 days. Blocked credits under Section 17(5) are excluded.
What professional services attract 18% GST?
Almost all professional services attract 18% GST: IT/software, legal, CA/accounting, management consulting, advertising, marketing, design, engineering, HR, recruitment, security, repair, and real estate agent services. The only major exceptions are healthcare (exempt), basic education (exempt), and some financial services (mixed).
How do I calculate 18% GST on an invoice?
GST calculation: If the amount is excluding GST, multiply by 0.18 (e.g., ₹1,00,000 × 0.18 = ₹18,000 GST). Total = ₹1,18,000. If GST is included in the amount, divide by 1.18 to get the base, then subtract: ₹1,18,000 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,00,000 base, GST = ₹18,000. Use the free GSTInvoice calculator for instant computation.
