How to Revise a GST Invoice (Step-by-Step Guide & Rules)
Revising a GST invoice after it has been issued requires either a Credit Note (if the revised amount is lower) or a Debit Note (if the revised amount is higher). A GST invoice cannot be directly edited — you must issue a supplementary document. GSTR-1 also allows limited amendment of previously filed invoices.

GSTR-1 Amendment Window
GSTR-1 allows amendment of invoices reported in earlier months — but only within the next 3 filing periods. For example, an invoice error in the March 2026 GSTR-1 can be corrected in April, May, or June 2026 GSTR-1 by using the "Amended B2B Invoices" section (Table 9A). After the 3-period window, you cannot amend the GSTR-1 entry — only a credit/debit note can address value changes. For non-value changes (wrong PAN, wrong GSTIN), file the amendment within the annual return period.
Example
A Pune supplier issued INV-2026-100 for ₹5,00,000 at 18% GST but should have been ₹4,50,000. Credit Note CN-2026-015 is issued: ₹50,000 + GST ₹9,000. The supplier reports CN-2026-015 in GSTR-1 Table 9B for that month. The buyer reduces ITC by ₹9,000. Net output tax reduced for supplier by ₹9,000.

No. Once issued, a GST invoice cannot be directly edited. Use a credit note (amount decrease), debit note (amount increase), or GSTR-1 amendment (non-value corrections).
How do I fix a wrong GSTIN on an invoice?
Amend the invoice in the next GSTR-1 filing (Table 9A — Amended B2B Invoices). No credit/debit note needed for non-value corrections.
What is the time limit for GSTR-1 amendment?
You can amend GSTR-1 entries within 3 GSTR-1 filing periods following the original filing period.
What is the difference between a credit note and invoice amendment?
A credit note reverses the tax amount (reduces output tax). GSTR-1 amendment corrects non-financial details (GSTIN, date, description) without changing the tax amount.
Why Businesses Stop Using Excel for GST Invoices
Manual GST calculation mistakes
One wrong CGST/SGST split or a misapplied rate triggers notices and ITC denial for your buyer.
Slow invoice creation
Copying last month's Excel file, updating dates, recalculating — 20 minutes for what should take 30 seconds.
Formatting breaks on every device
Excel invoices look different on every printer and PDF converter. Clients complain about unreadable layouts.
No easy sharing or payment link
Sending PDFs over WhatsApp with no way for clients to pay directly slows down collections.
Incorrect tax type (IGST vs CGST+SGST)
Excel can't auto-detect intra vs inter-state supply. Wrong tax type = ITC rejected for your buyer.
